The external event
Everyone of us is inundated with some 2 to 4 billion bits of information per second through all of our senses (visual, auditory, feelings, taste and smell). We are not consciously aware of most of this information (for instance: how do your toes feel now? Until I mentioned it you weren't aware of it. But then when I brought your attention to it you are completely aware of how they feel).
Our brains would be in overload in a very short time if we had to consciously process all the information all the time so therefore we have to filter it to decide what is important in any given moment or not.
The filter
The NLP communication model shows that there three things happen from the filtering process. Most information is either deleted, distorted or generalised.
The filtering is done against a number of criteria that you have developed growing up, the things that have happened to you and the meaning you have made.
These include:
Values and beliefs
Language
Memories and experiences
Preferences for behaviour and thinking (called Meta Programmes)
